A short Glossary of Studio Photography

Flash Synchronization
This is the automatic synchronization for triggering of the flash device – it ensures that the shutter covers the entire aperture (projector film trap) during the flash period.

Daylight
For continuous lighting equipment the applied light source and material used has a colour temperature ranging from 5200 Kelvin to 6500 Kelvin. The rental studio offer A 1300 W powered, 5 – step daylight source.

Photo cell
Through a photo cell further flash heads are activated/triggered.

High – Key
Describes the „creative/artistic/aesthetic“- technical style which is common among fashion photographers; light colour tones as well as soft contrast values dominate and the picture is not overexposed.

Histogramm
A Histogramm refers to the components of grey values, i.e. colour values that make up picture. It also transmits information about the range of contrast and image/picture brightness.

ISO
(Int. Org. for Stand.) It describes th light sensitivity of photo sensors and films. With increasing sensitivity the film`s resolution potential recedes. With digital technology the change in sensitivity is also accompanied by picture noise.

Guide number
A measure that is included with the (Light) power of a flash unit/device.

Low – Key
This describes the aesthetic – technical style that amongst photographers, where dark colour tones dominate and the picture is not underexposed.

Cove
The background material is adjusted and shifted to such an extent that a cove/pit form is created which allows for a continuous transition from the wall to the floor, thus avoiding distractive „room lines“. This type is often used when preparing complete /„full - body“ portraits.

Octobox
This 8-sided reflectorform is erected in such a way that light reflectance is almost round / oval. It thus allows for a very fine and gentle transition from light to shadow. An Octobox is very much suited for portrait shots.

Reflector panel
This is a right-angled reflector form that reflects incoming/incident light rays when the coating is light; whith a darl surface the light is absorbed. The light is softened by the reflector. The Berlinrental Studio has on offer: Silver, Gold, White and Black.

Strip light/Softbox
Right-angled or 8 – sided boxes that are mounted on a tripod/stativ. The received/desired light is very soft; it allows for reduction in „shadow emergence“. The studio has on offer: 1 Octogon/Softbox d = 100 cm

Umbrella
These are reflectors which resemble rain/outdoor umbrellas and have an inner lining that has a light coating – thereby scattering and reflecting the light in a specific and desired direction.

Synchronous Cable
This cable`s function is to connect the camera to the flash system. During this process the trigger signal signal is conveyed to the flash.
